Etch glass using etching cream or a rotary tool. You can use precut stencils or make your own to make a beautiful etched piece.
Patterns:
Patterns for glass etching can be found any where. You can purchase stencils from many stores. If you can draw you could draw the picture on the glass with a permanent marker. Or if you don’t have artistic abilities or a steady hand you can find clip art and print it out using your computer for the size you need. Cut it out or trace it onto the glass. A tip is to use laminate. Place the laminate on the glass and using the picture you printed out. Tape the picture to the laminate and cut it out using a utility knife. You can also print out pictures of people to etch on glass. Or apply a personalized name or phrase to the glass.
Supplies:
Supplies needed for etching glass depends on how you will be etching the glass. For any technique however, you will need a stencil and the glass object you will be etching. For the etching cream you will need rubber gloves, paint brush or sponge to apply the cream, and a rag to clean up any spills or drips. For the rotary tool technique you will need the rotary tool with a glass etching, sanding, or diamond bit. You should wear safety glasses and mask to protect your eyes and keep from breathing in the glass dust. You should have a damp rag handy to wipe where you have etched to check that you have etched it completely.

Techniques:
There are two main techniques for etching glass. The etching cream process is the fastest way. You apply the cream to the glass in a design you want or use a stencil to apply the cream on the glass to transfer the stencil design to the glass. You allow the cream to remain on the glass for five to fifteen minutes then rinse it completely off the surface. You should read and follow the directions on the label of the glass etching cream package before you start. Be careful using this way, you can easily etch areas you don’t want etched.
The rotary tool technique takes more time. You must etch every part of the pattern by hand using the tool. However, by using this application you can control what gets etched better. You can add designs in side the etched area easily. For example if you where etching a leaf you could add an appearance of veins by etching that area more or in a different direction of the rest of the etching. If you have a rotary tool that has speeds you can also receive a different look by changing the speed. You can also etch outlines of patterns without having to worry about etching parts you don’t want etched.
Which ever way you choose to use apply appropriate precautions. If you can, practice on another piece of glass first because you cannot undo etched glass. Think out what pattern you want and the part you want to be etched from the pattern. Take your time while doing the etching. You want to produce an etching you can be proud of not a piece that looks rushed. With a little time and patience you can have a beautiful etched piece that you love.
